The primary objective was to expand upward rather than outward. Adding a second story allowed the family to access views, light, air, and the surrounding tree canopy that had previously been unavailable, while preserving the yard that had become an integral part of daily life. Concord grape vines, established long before the property was purchased, continue to thrive along the site, with a studio and workshop beyond.
The renovation reorganized the ground floor to support a more open and flexible way of living. One bedroom and a full bath were retained on the first floor for guests, while a second bedroom was transformed into living space. The kitchen and dining areas were expanded and connected to a casual open plan living room, anchored by a large built in sofa. Extensive integrated storage throughout the house minimizes the need for additional furniture, allowing spaces to remain uncluttered and adaptable.
The new upper level contains the family’s bedrooms, each defined by generous ceiling heights and a strong connection to natural light. Designed around the evolving needs of their son, his bedroom was envisioned as a place to nurture creativity, welcome friends and offer an uplifting space to retreat.
The project is deeply attuned to the movement of the sun. Each morning, when one walks towards the stair, a tall window traces the path of the sunrise. In the evening, the western facing living spaces become places for cooking, gathering, and lounging as the setting sun fills the house. Daily life is enriched by an awareness of the changing sky, the movement of the sun and the presence of the natural world within a small urban infill lot.
